Abstract: The outbreak of COVID-19 has exerted serous impact on epidemic prevention and control as well as teaching of colleges and universities. It is a great challenge for educators to carry out teaching as planned in responding to the call of “non-stopping teaching and learning” by the Ministry of Education. However, higher education institutions are confronted with the fact that large-scale online teaching and learning are still lack of practice and experience. This paper first discussed the feasibility of online teaching under the epidemic. It then identified the following problems: there are too many online platforms and some of them have design defects; the platform systems are not running smoothly and online teaching are often conducted on peak hours; teaching concepts are traditional and learning is inactive; curricula need redesigning and classroom management is loosely regulated; formative assessments are rigid and feedbacks are not received timely. It also put forward some corresponding countermeasures to cope with the above problems. The paper provides some reference of online teaching for other colleges and universities.

Key words: online teaching, colleges and universities, COVID-19 outbreak, countermeasure
