Abstract: Objectives This research aims to identify the difficulties resident doctors encountered during standardized clinical training in Dermatology department by applying significant event analysis (SEA) teaching method, and determine the impact of SEA method on students’ coping ability in clinical practice. Method Using SEA questionnaire survey, students described the impressive events in the practice of Dermatology department, reflected on the actions taken to deal with the situations, then discussed the solutions that can be provided. Teachers determined the rationality of students’ solutions before and after SEA reflections and statistically analyzed the results. Results Questionnaire survey showed the common problems encountered by medical students in Dermatology clinical practice were “difficulties in explaining informed consent”, “methods to gain patients’ trust and to improve compliance”, “difficulties in handling the elderly and child patients”, “gaps between theories and practices in clinical situations”. After SEA reflection, the proportion of students with more reasonable management plans against the problems was significantly increased. Conclusion SEA teaching method is helpful for students to acquire professional skills through in-depth reflection on their clinical experiences.
