Status and teaching reform of traditional medicine in practice of modern rehabilitation medicine: a survey and discussion*

Abstract: Objective To understand the current status of traditional rehabilitation medicine (TRM) in the practice and undergraduate education of modern rehabilitation medicine (MRM), and to discuss the teaching reform methods and strategy of TRM in the undergraduate education of modern rehabilitation therapeutics. Methods A survey was carried out in domestic rehabilitation personnel on current application of TRM in the practice of MRM and teaching mode for undergraduates in specialty of rehabilitation therapeutics. Results There were totally 197 valid questionnaires received. The results showed that the application of TRM was widespread in MRM institutions. But some problems still existed in the undergraduate education in specialty of rehabilitation therapeutics, such as TRM being an optional course, lack of teaching hours, non-prominent of key point in teaching content and laterality of theory teaching. Conclusion The teaching reform of TRM in the undergraduate education in specialty of rehabilitation therapeutics should pay more attention to curriculum setting and planning and teaching content and methods in order to adapt to and improve the development of MRM.
